7/17/2003, Lake Sylvia State Park to Fort Camby State Park, 82.06 miles

I had meant to bike only 50 or so miles to Bay Center but decided to keep on cycling partly because Diana (a I met at camp yesterday who is planning to cycle from Seattle to San Francisco in just 2 weeks) is going long, partly because I wanted to make up for some lost times at Potlach, and partly because I was at Bay Center before noon! I would catch up with Diana at Wilpa Refuge Headquarters, from where we would bike together until Ilwaco, just north of Fort Camby.

Today was a good day. I caught a dream tail wind for 20-30 miles. The only problem was between Bay center and Wilpa Refuge when I realized I was running low on water. Further, it turned out there was no potable water in the next 30 miles or so! The water I eventually got from a garden hose was muddy, but I had no choice and was forced to use my emergency iodine tablet for the only time in the trip.

Later I had a much deserved ice cream treat at a grocery store in Ilwaco. At camp, I also got to hike a little bit - up Cape Disappointment, where Lewis and Clark gazed out the same Pacific Ocean some 200 years ago. The camping is ok (hiker/biker site is at the edge of a big grassy area) though a bit windy.

Tomorrow I meet up with Sis. I can't believe I am done with Washington!
